You will be introduced to all aspects of hairdressing and ‘learn by doing’. The programme is flexible and you will have the opportunity gain placement in a salon as part of your course.
You will need to be mature and confident in your learning styles.
The course moves at a pace to allow you to develop as an individual and manage your own learning with assistance from our dedicated and highly qualified staff who will give you full support as you develop your skills and abilities. You will develop and maintain a high level of professionalism, behaviour and work ethos which is required when you go into employment in the industry.
Your course is delivered with practical and theory elements ensuring you develop strong underpinning knowledge, skill and ability which will prepare you for the industry. We expect commitment and motivation from you and in return we will provide you with a stimulating environment, learning from the highly qualified tutors who work hard to assist and support you. A key aspect of your training is to gain strong commercial experience, we provide you with an exclusive opportunity to work in our state of the art salon and build your client base whilst receiving support and guidance from your tutor.
Courses are available on full time, part time or an apprentice. The best option for you will be identified and discussed within your interview.
There is also an opportunity to link in previous qualifications recognised with prior learning achievements.
Course content section
Entering into this exciting and creative world, this course is designed to give you the skill and knowledge of a professional stylist. The course is broken down into mandatory units which will make up the core aspects of your qualification. The following units will be covered:
- Ensure responsibility for actions to reduce risks to health and safety
- Unit 201 Style and finish hair
- Unit 202 Set and dress hair
- Unit 203 Cut hair using basic techniques
- Unit 204 Colour and lighten hair
- Unit 205 Advise and consult with clients
- Unit 206 Shampoo, condition and treat the hair and scalp
- Unit 210 Plait and twist hair
- Unit 207 Develop and maintain your effectiveness at work
The course is available to anyone aged 16+. Ideally you will have 3 GCSE’S grades C/D including Maths and English however it is not essential as Picassos offers additional classes within Functional Skills that may be mandatory for your achievement within the course. You will undergo an Initial Assessment upon your Induction week; this will enable Picassos to support your development within Functional Skills and general learning. Picassos seeks individuals whom of which are highly motivated, professional, well presented and committed to their studies.

Learners will be assessed against the Awarding Body criteria; this will include a variety of assessment methods such as online testing and oral questioning which will demonstrate your underpinning knowledge. Practical assessments will be performed on clients within commercial salon; this will require you to meet minimum standards and commercial acceptable timings set by the Awarding Body. Homework such as written assignments and research activities will also be set to enhance your development and learning.
Upon successful completion you will be encouraged to progress onto NVQ Level 3 Hairdressing as an apprentice. You may also choose to progress onto Barbering. There is also the opportunity to progress onto NVQ Level 2 Nail Services or Beauty Therapy.
